Marcano's Lifetime Ban
Major League Baseball banned Tucupita Marcano for life for betting on baseball, including 25 bets on Pirates games while he was on Pittsburgh's roster. It was the first lifetime gambling ban since Pete Rose in 1989.

June 4, 2024. Major League Baseball banned Tucupita Marcano for life. He had bet on baseball. Twenty-five of the bets were on Pittsburgh games while he was on the Pirates' roster, on the injured list. He was with the Padres by the time the ban was announced. Four other players were suspended for one year. Marcano was the one who did not get a return date.
A lifetime ban for gambling on the game had not been issued since Pete Rose in 1989. The rule is older than either of them. A player does not bet on baseball, and he does not bet on his own club. Marcano had done both, from the injured list, which is still the roster.
The entry records the ban and the number of bets. It does not need the comparison to do the work. The comparison is why the date is in the catalog at all.
