June 13, 2023, the Rays at the Oakland Coliseum. The announced crowd was 27,759, the largest of the Athletics' season. The point of the night was the crowd. Fans organized a reverse boycott of the planned move to Las Vegas: fill the park once, in shirts that read SELL, and chant for the owner to sell the team.
John Fisher was the owner the chants named. The club played its last season in Oakland in 2024 and moved its home games to Sacramento while a Las Vegas ballpark was unfinished. The protest did not stop the move. It made the argument in the building the argument was about.
A promotion fills a park by pricing beer or records. This one filled a park by asking the customers to show up and say the opposite of what the owner intended. The game was played. The entry is the reason the seats were full.
