October 30, 2024, Game 5 at Yankee Stadium. New York led, 5–0. In the fifth, Tommy Edman hit a routine fly to center. Aaron Judge dropped it. Anthony Volpe, the shortstop, then bounced a throw to third. Gerrit Cole, the pitcher, did not cover first on a ground ball by Mookie Betts.

The Dodgers scored five unearned runs and tied the game. They won it, 7–6, and won the series. Freddie Freeman had already been the story of the series at the plate. This inning was the field.

None of the three mistakes was exotic. A fly ball, a throw, a pitcher covering a base. Filed together they are the inning a five-run lead left. Separately, each one is a play a major-league club makes, and misses, in April.
