The Ball over Cruz
With two outs in the ninth of World Series Game 6, David Freese's ball went over Nelson Cruz's head and tied the game. Texas led again in the tenth. St. Louis won in the eleventh.
October 27, 2011, Game 6 at Busch Stadium. The Rangers led, 7–5, in the bottom of the ninth, two outs from a championship. Neftali Feliz was pitching. Ryan Theriot struck out. Albert Pujols doubled. Lance Berkman walked. Allen Craig struck out. David Freese then hit a ball into right field, over Nelson Cruz, for a two-run triple. The game was tied, 7–7.
In the tenth Josh Hamilton homered, and Texas led, 9–7. St. Louis scored once and then tied it again on Berkman's single. In the eleventh Freese led off with a home run against Mark Lowe. The Cardinals won, 10–9. They won Game 7 the next night.
Cruz did not drop a ball he had caught. The triple went over his head, which is a different play and, in the retelling, the same one: the right fielder at the moment the lead disappeared. The game had a second lead after that, and a walk-off that was not his to field.
